This studio session was most likely recorded in late September or early October 1975. The purpose of this session was to find out how the band can sound with five musicians instead of three. So two additional guest musicians, John Locke from Spirit and Mark Andes from Jo Jo Gunne, were invited to play on keyboards and bass guitar.

The Runaways “Cherokee Studios - 1975” LP: within months of forming in summer of 1975 the Runaways went into Gold Star studios as a three piece to record a 5 song demo in August of 1975. Then, sometime that fall they went to Cherokee Studios and recorded a second full 10 song album demo, which was lost to the sands of time for many years…. until this LP!

Features a few songs that never appeared on later LPs, and is an amazing document of the band in their formative stages. Only 118 of them pressed, if you’re looking send me a DM for info. An essential item for any Runaways fan IMHO!

David Bowie was also in Cherokee Studios in 1975 recording “Station to Station”, also included in this post are a photo of the tape box for one of the reels from the studio, and a photo of Bowie leaving Cherokee Studios - which was on Fairfax a block north of where Braindead is now.

I remember being so excited when I saw Cherokee Ave for the first time when I moved out here, but as I mentioned the studio was actually on Fairfax. The location on Fairfax closed in 2007, and is now condos. And then Cherokee reopened on Melrose in 2020, and I think they’re still there. They have a website & wiki page if you wanna read more! Cool LA music history for sure.
